Union Square & Nob Hill
Cable car bells, department stores and grand old hotels on the hill.
Union Square and Nob Hill are the classic downtown stay: department stores, theatres, cable cars and the grand hotels on the crest of the hill. It is the most convenient base for a short visit, with transit to everywhere and the widest hotel range. The trade is a commercial feel and edges that change quickly: the Tenderloin is a few blocks west, and some streets south of Market are rough at night. Stay near the square or on Nob Hill and walk with purpose.
What works
- Cable cars, BART and Muni nearby
- The widest hotel choice
- Walkable to Chinatown and the waterfront
What doesn’t
- Commercial and busy
- Rough streets a few blocks away
- Steep hills in every direction
One local move
Ride the cable car once for the experience, then use buses and BART for actual transport. For a good, non-tourist lunch, walk into Chinatown or toward the Ferry Building rather than eating on the square.
Getting around
Powell Street BART and the Powell-Hyde cable car are the main connections. Muni buses climb the hills, and the California Street cable car serves Nob Hill; walking downhill is easy, walking up is not.
Safety
Stay east of the Tenderloin and north of Market after dark. The square itself is busy and well lit. Do not leave bags visible in cars, and keep phones close on Market Street.
