Fisherman's Wharf

Sea lions, chowder bread bowls and the bay at the end of the street.

Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square sit at the northern edge of the city, with the bay, Alcatraz ferries and the cable car to downtown. It is the easiest base for families and first-timers who want the waterfront without a hike, and hotels are generally larger than in North Beach. It is also the city's most touristy district: chain restaurants, souvenir shops and crowds. Treat it as a convenient, comfortable base, not the real San Francisco.

What works

  • Bay, Alcatraz and cable car at the door
  • Larger family rooms
  • Quiet evenings by the water

What doesn’t

  • Very touristy and chain-heavy
  • Fewer local restaurants
  • Away from the city's real neighbourhoods

One local move

Go to the sea lions and Alcatraz early, then escape the Wharf for dinner in North Beach or the Marina. The cable car is a sightseeing ride, not a fast way to cross town.

Getting around

The Powell-Hyde cable car ends at the Wharf, and buses along Beach and North Point streets connect to downtown. Alcatraz ferries leave from Pier 33, a short walk east.

Safety

Safe and busy in the daytime; quiet after the restaurants close. Watch for pickpockets in the Pier 39 crowds and keep children close near the water.

Residential-style suites above Ghirardelli Square with bay views and kitchens; ideal for families or a longer stay.

Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Boudin Bakery

    Bakery & chowder

The famous sourdough bakery and chowder bread bowl; touristy, but the bread is genuinely good and the view is free.

  2. Scoma's

    Seafood

A long-standing seafood restaurant on the fishing pier; white tablecloths, bay views and higher prices.

  3. The Codmother Fish and Chips

    Fish & chips

A small, well-liked fish-and-chips stand near the Wharf; cheap, crispy and a good antidote to the sit-down restaurants.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
