Prati
Wide streets, polished apartments and the Vatican at the end of the road.
Prati is the calm, residential answer to central Rome. Streets are wider, pavements are easier with a pushchair, and the Vatican Museums and St Peter's are within walking distance. It has fewer ancient ruins at the door and a more businesslike evening, but the restaurants are solid and the hotels are generally larger. For families and anyone who values a quiet night, it is the sensible choice.
What works
- Walk to the Vatican Museums and St Peter's
- Quieter, more residential evenings
- Larger rooms and more family-friendly hotels
What doesn’t
- Fewer headline sights on the doorstep
- Restaurants are good but not the city's most exciting
- Metro A is useful, but the bus can be faster for the centre
One local move
Book Vatican Museums entry for the first slot and go straight to the Sistine Chapel before the tour groups build. For dinner, walk two blocks off the main streets toward Cola di Rienzo for better value.
Getting around
Metro A stations Ottaviano and Lepanto cover the Vatican and the centre. Walking to Piazza del Popolo takes about 20 minutes along the river, and the area is flat enough for strollers.
Safety
One of the easier central quarters at night. Still watch for pickpockets around St Peter's and on bus 40, a known route for them.
