Malá Strana
Baroque facades, embassy gardens and the castle path above.
Malá Strana, the Lesser Town, is the quiet, aristocratic side of the river. It has baroque churches, hidden gardens, good hotels and the climb to Prague Castle on its doorstep. Evenings are calmer than Old Town, and the streets are prettier, but you will rely on trams or long walks to reach the rest of the city. Boots with grip matter in winter, when the cobbles and stairs get slick.
What works
- Quieter, more romantic streets
- Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge nearby
- Good small hotels and garden restaurants
What doesn’t
- Hilly streets and stairs with no metro
- Tourist crowds along the main route to the castle
- Fewer late-night food options
One local move
Walk up to the castle early and come down through the gardens rather than the main street. At night, eat here rather than crossing the bridge; the food is less rushed and the walk home much shorter.
Getting around
Tram 22 and 23 run along the river edge and up toward the castle; the metro is a 15-minute walk across the bridge. The old town is walkable, but the climb back is steep.
Safety
Safe and calm at night, with uneven surfaces as the main hazard. Keep to the main lanes after dark and watch for cars on the narrow streets, which sometimes have no pavement.
