Altstadt & Lehel
Glockenspiel, beer halls and the calm river side of the old city.
Munich's Altstadt is compact and handsome: Marienplatz and its Glockenspiel, the Frauenkirche, the Residenz and the vast Viktualienmarkt are all within a few minutes of each other. Lehel, to the north-east, is quieter and greener, with the English Garden and the Isar within walking distance. Together they make the easiest base for a short first trip. The centre is busy in the daytime and unusually quiet after the shops close, and hotel prices reflect the postcard address rather than nightlife.
What works
- All the classic sights are within a short walk
- Excellent S-Bahn and U-Bahn access
- The English Garden and Isar for green space
What doesn’t
- Expensive and quiet in the evening
- Tourist-heavy around Marienplatz
- Few late-night food options inside the old town
One local move
Do the Viktualienmarkt for breakfast, not lunch, when Munchners are actually shopping there, then walk through the English Garden to the Eisbach and the beer garden at the Chinese Tower. Save Marienplatz for early evening, after the day groups have gone.
Getting around
Marienplatz is served by U3 and U6, and all S-Bahn lines stop at Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof; Odeonsplatz adds U3, U4, U5 and U6. Trams run along the edge of the old town. Most of the centre and Lehel is flat and walkable, with the English Garden reachable on foot from Odeonsplatz.
Safety
Very safe, with a visible police presence around the main squares. Watch for pickpockets at Marienplatz, the Hauptbahnhof and during Oktoberfest, and look both ways for bicycles on the riverside paths.
4 picks in Altstadt & Lehel
One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.
Hotel Bayerischer Hof
A grand family-run five-star near Promenadeplatz, with several restaurants, bars and a famous rooftop. It is old-world Munich at its most polished; rooms range from classic to modern, so ask what you are getting.
Hotel Torbräu
Munich's oldest hotel, a family-run four-star near Isartor with traditional rooms and a good breakfast. The location is excellent for the Viktualienmarkt and the river, and it feels more personal than the chains.
Hotel Schlicker
A small, old-fashioned hotel on Tal, steps from the Viktualienmarkt. Rooms are simple and some are small, but the location is hard to beat at this price; no big lobby, just a reliable bed.
Hotel Lux
A tiny design hotel in a quiet Altstadt lane, with individually styled rooms and a breakfast room that feels like a private apartment. It is intimate and stylised rather than full-service.
Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Viktualienmarkt
Food market & beer garden
Munich's central food market, with produce, cheese, spices, butcher counters and a beer garden in the middle. It is a market for locals as well as visitors; come before lunch and graze.
Café Frischhut
Bakery
A small bakery near the Viktualienmarkt specialising in Schmalznudeln and other Bavarian pastries. It is a morning institution; the queue moves fast and the portions are generous.
Hofbräuhaus
Beer hall
The famous beer hall near the Residenz, huge, noisy and unambiguously touristy. It is still worth one visit for the atmosphere and the shared tables; do not judge Munich's food scene by it.
