Roma Norte & Condesa

Jacaranda trees, café tables and dogs on every corner.

Roma Norte and Condesa are adjacent neighbourhoods of tree-lined streets, Art Deco buildings, cafés and excellent restaurants. They are the most liveable part of the city for a visitor: walkable, social, and less monumental than the centre. Roma is grid-like and busy, Condesa is greener and loopier around Parque México. Hotels are mostly small and design-led, which means character and higher prices but fewer big facilities.

What works

  • The best everyday food and coffee
  • Walkable, attractive streets
  • Parks and a relaxed pace

What doesn’t

  • Fewer big sights in the area
  • Higher prices than the centre
  • Traffic between areas

One local move

Eat lunch, not dinner, at the famous restaurants — reservations are easier and prices are lower. Walk Parque México in the early evening, when the neighbourhood is at its best.

Getting around

Metro stations along Insurgentes and Chapultepec are useful, but the areas are not on the most convenient lines. Walking within each neighbourhood is easy; rideshares are the practical way to cross town.

Safety

Safe and busy by day and early evening. Petty theft happens in the bar areas at night; keep your phone out of sight, and take a registered rideshare rather than walking home late.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
