Kadıköy

The Asian side's food market, ferry horns and no tourist menus.

Kadıköy is where Istanbullus go to eat, drink and shop on a weekend. The market streets around Güneşlibahçe and the Moda waterfront are full of cheese sellers, pickle shops, fish restaurants and coffee roasters, with prices that are noticeably friendlier than Sultanahmet's. The trade is distance: the old city is a ferry or a long metro ride away. That ferry, though, is one of the best commutes in the world.

What works

  • Excellent food at local prices
  • A slower, more residential atmosphere
  • The ferry to the old city is a pleasure, not a chore

What doesn’t

  • Sights are across the water
  • Ferries stop before midnight
  • Some streets are very quiet late at night

One local move

Do your food shopping and eating here rather than in Sultanahmet. Take the Eminönü ferry at sunset at least once, and sit on the top deck even if it is windy — the skyline is the whole point.

Getting around

Ferries from Kadıköy to Eminönü and Karaköy are the scenic route; the Marmaray rail crossing is faster in bad weather. The metro connects to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and the airport line.

Safety

Calm and comfortable by day and early evening. Late at night, the bar streets are lively; the empty market lanes are simply quiet rather than dangerous, but keep to main routes.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
