Camps Bay & Atlantic Seaboard

A beach between mountains, with sunset on the other side of the road.

Camps Bay sits on the Atlantic side, with a wide beach backed by the Twelve Apostles and a strip of restaurants and bars facing the sunset. It is the most scenic base for a holiday, popular for beach days, sundowners and a slower rhythm. The water is cold, the wind can be strong, and the area is 20–30 minutes from the City Bowl, so you will use taxis or a car for everything else.

What works

  • The beach and sunset views
  • Restaurants and bars on the strip
  • A relaxed holiday atmosphere

What doesn’t

  • Cold water and strong wind
  • Far from the city centre
  • Limited public transport

One local move

Check the wind before committing to a beach day; Camps Bay can be miserable when the south-easter blows, and Clifton or the city side may be calmer. Stay for sunset once, then eat off the main strip.

Getting around

There is no useful train; the local bus is slow and infrequent. Rideshares and taxis are the practical option, and a car makes sense if you plan to explore the peninsula.

Safety

The main strip is busy and generally safe by day, with more care needed at night. The beach itself is safe for walking but the sea is cold and rough; do not swim where there are no lifeguards.
