Jordaan

Narrow canals, corner cafés and the feeling of a village inside a city.

The Jordaan began as a working-class quarter and is now one of Amsterdam's most desirable addresses. Streets are quiet at night, the canals are smaller and prettier than the main ring, and the Nine Streets shopping area is at the edge. It is still close enough to walk to the centre, but far enough to sleep. The trade is price and availability: rooms are scarce and the best places book out early.

What works

  • Quiet nights on genuinely pretty canals
  • Independent shops, cafés and brown bars
  • Walkable to the centre and Museum Quarter

What doesn’t

  • Expensive and heavily booked
  • Fewer hotel rooms, many with steep stairs
  • Limited late-night transport compared with Centrum

One local move

Look for a hotel with a lift if you have a suitcase; canal houses can have four flights of narrow stairs. Saturday is busiest, when the streets fill with shopping crowds, so plan a museum or a longer walk that day.

Getting around

Trams along Rozengracht and Marnixstraat connect to Centraal and the west; the centre is a 15-minute walk. Buses thin out late, so plan your evening around walking or a short taxi.

Safety

Calm and well used at night. The main risks are bikes that appear silently at crossings and the occasional pickpocket in the Nine Streets during the day.

The shortlist

4 picks in Jordaan

One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.

Luxury$420–$650

Pulitzer Amsterdam

A rambling collection of 25 canal houses with a garden and several bars; the location is romantic, the layout is a maze, and the best rooms are worth asking for.

Mid-range$200–$320

Hotel Wiechmann

A small, charming B&B in a canal house with a garden; personal service, steep stairs and a location that feels like a local street.

Budget$130–$210

Hotel Hegra

A simple two-star on the Herengracht with compact rooms and a loyal following; no lift and no lobby scene, but a good canal address.

Unique$220–$360

The Hoxton Amsterdam

A lively design hotel on the Herengracht with a popular bar and compact, well-designed rooms; the Jordaan edge, five minutes from the Nine Streets.

Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Winkel 43

    Café & apple pie

The famous apple pie, best with a coffee on the terrace; expect a queue on sunny weekends and a lively hubbub rather than table service.

  2. Restaurant Toscanini

    Italian

A long-standing Italian restaurant with a serious kitchen and a busy, noisy room; book ahead and do not expect a quick meal.

  3. Café 't Smalle

    Brown café

A canal-side brown café with a terrace over the water; good for an afternoon beer, less good for a full dinner.

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
