Circular Quay & The Rocks

Ferries, sandstone lanes and the Opera House at the end of the street.

Circular Quay and The Rocks are where Sydney's postcard view actually is: the Opera House, the harbour bridge, the ferries and the old sandstone warehouses of The Rocks. It is the best base for a first visit, with almost every harbour trip starting from your doorstep and the botanical garden a short walk away. It is also the most expensive and most touristy part of the city, quiet after the day-trippers leave.

First tripViewsSightseeingLuxury

What works

  • Opera House, bridge and ferries on foot
  • The botanical garden next door
  • Unbeatable first-trip location

What doesn’t

  • The most expensive area
  • Tourist-heavy during the day
  • Quiet and commercial at night

One local move

Take the ferry to Manly rather than a harbour cruise; it is cheaper, faster and the best view in the city. Do the Opera House early, then walk the botanic garden to Mrs Macquarie's Chair.

Getting around

Circular Quay is the ferry hub, with trains and light rail also stopping there. Everything around the harbour is walkable; use the ferry for Manly, Watsons Bay and the zoo.

Safety

Very safe and well lit. The main issues are crowds and pickpockets at ferry terminals during peak times; keep bags zipped and allow more time than you think for the quay.

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
