Tennoji & Shinsekai
Retro towers, kushikatsu signs and a slower, older Osaka.
Tennoji and Shinsekai are south Osaka at its most old-fashioned: the Tsutenkaku tower, cheap kushikatsu bars, a big park and a zoo, with Abeno Harukas rising above it all. Rooms here are cheaper than Namba or Umeda, and the area has a rougher, more lived-in feel that some travellers love. It is safe but scruffy in places, and not the place for late-night elegance. The transport is good, with JR, metro and the Nankai line.
What works
- Cheaper rooms than the main hubs
- Kushikatsu and retro street life
- Tennoji Park and the zoo nearby
What doesn’t
- Scruffy in parts
- Fewer polished restaurants
- Longer ride to Dotonbori nightlife
One local move
Eat kushikatsu at lunch when the bars are calmer, then visit the park and the tower. For dinner, take the short train to Namba if you want more choice; the contrast between the two areas is part of the trip.
Getting around
Tennoji station is a major hub for JR, metro and the Nankai line; Shinsekai is a 10-minute walk from Dobutsuen-mae or Tennoji. Abeno Harukas and the park are close to the station.
Safety
Safe, but Shinsekai can feel rough at night, with touts and heavy drinking. Stick to the busy kushikatsu streets after dark, and do not follow anyone into an unmarked bar.
