The Loop

Architecture, trains overhead and the Art Institute at your door.

The Loop is Chicago's business centre and transport hub: the Art Institute, Millennium Park, the river architecture and the elevated trains all sit within a walk. It is the easiest base for a short visit and the best value for a central hotel, especially at weekends when business travel drops. The trade is that it empties after office hours, and some blocks can feel deserted at night. Restaurants are scarce compared with River North.

What works

  • Museums, parks and the river on foot
  • Every train line converges here
  • Better weekend hotel prices

What doesn’t

  • Empty after office hours
  • Fewer restaurants than River North
  • Some blocks quiet at night

One local move

Do the architecture and museums from here, then eat in River North or the West Loop. The river walk is best on a warm evening; in winter, use the underground Pedway to avoid the wind.

Getting around

All CTA lines pass through the Loop, and Union Station connects Amtrak and commuter trains. The elevated tracks are noisy but useful; walking to River North or the lakefront takes 15–20 minutes.

Safety

Safe and well lit. The quiet after dark is the main concern; walk toward River North or the lakefront rather than through empty office blocks, and use busy stations.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
