Eixample

A modernist grid of wide avenues, cafés and excellent people-watching.

The Eixample is Barcelona's 19th-century expansion, all chamfered corners and wide streets lined with modernist facades. It is not the postcard old town, and that is the point: you get space, reliable restaurants, two metro lines within easy reach and a straightforward walk to most of the modernista sights. The trade is traffic noise on the big avenues and a slightly corporate feel in parts.

What works

  • Central, walkable grid with strong metro coverage
  • Restaurants that serve locals as well as visitors
  • Bigger rooms and better hotel value than the old town

What doesn’t

  • Traffic noise on the major avenues
  • Less atmospheric than the Gothic lanes
  • Some stretches feel more business than neighbourhood

One local move

Pick a hotel on a cross street rather than Gran Via or Diagonal if sleep matters. For Gaudí, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are within ten minutes; book the first entry of the day and walk the quieter blocks afterwards.

Getting around

Metro Passeig de Gràcia connects L2, L3 and L4; most of the centre is a 20–30 minute walk. Use the Diagonal and Gran Via buses for longer hops, and avoid driving.

Safety

The area is busy but comfortable at night. Pickpockets still work the metro and café terraces; keep bags zipped and phones off the table.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Tapas 24

    Tapas

A lively basement counter for modern tapas and the famous bikini sandwich; busy, cramped and best outside peak hours.

  2. Cervecería Catalana

    Tapas & vermouth

A reliable, always-busy spot for seafood tapas and vermouth; excellent for a first night when you want the ritual without a pilgrimage.

  3. El Nacional

    Food hall

A former car workshop turned into several counters under one roof; convenient for mixed groups, less intimate than a neighbourhood bar.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
